Dear Parents/Guardians,

Welcome to the 2007 marching season at Centennial High School!  Centennial has had a long tradition of excellence and hard work; congratulations on your student now being a part of that tradition!  With such a wonderful history behind us, I am excited about what is ahead!

Let me introduce myself; my name is Carlos Campos.  This is my sixth year of teaching and my second year here at Centennial High School.  I graduated from Weber State University in Ogden, Utah with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education.  Although I am familiar with a large range of instruments, I mainly play the tuba and cello.  I started my teaching career at Foothill High School, and am thrilled to continue helping students here for times to come!

Ok, covered the school, talked about me…oh yes- the students and you.  The single most important resource here at Centennial High School is the students.  They are the lifeblood of the school.  However, their success depends on your support, particularly with our illustrious Marching Hawks and Golden Pageantry Corps.  Your contributions this year will greatly aid in the tremendous success this band will have this year.  I am really looking forward to a great year, as well as getting to know you.  Thank you so much, and again, welcome!

Sincerely,

Carlos Campos

RULES AND REQUIREMENTS:

ATTENDANCE:

1.      Due to the intense performance environment found within marching band, attendance to all practices and performances is required.

2.     Students are to attend ALL functions except for the following reasons:

a.      Illness- Students must bring a signed note from either a Medical Practitioner or their parent

b.     Medical Appointments- Students who are absent due to a medical appointment and DO NOT clear said appointment a week in advance may not be excused.

c.     Familial Obligations- Students are excused from functions for family obligations such as death, birth, or illness.  Family vacations or reunions are only excused if the event is cleared with the director one week in advance.  Vacations are not a viable excuse on competition days.

d.     Academic Obligations (or extra-curricular activities) - Students can be absent for academic obligations if and only if they are cleared one week in advance.  Extracurricular activities (driving lessons, collegiate tests, college expos, etc) are not excused on the days of the competition.

3.     Any student absent from a Tuesday practice without prior authorization will not be allowed to perform that Friday or that Saturday, depending on the week.

4.     Any student absent at a Friday performance cannot participate on field at a Saturday competition.  The student is required to attend the Saturday performance however, and may help as support crew.

5.     It is the student’s responsibility to ensure attendance at all of the functions.  A student may not arrive late or leave early unless it is within the guidelines above.  Any unexcused delays in time will result in an unexcused absence.

6.     If a student misses more than 3 functions, whether excused or unexcused, the student may be subject to restrictions such as grade drops, suspension from performances or additional after school practice.

7.     If a student has an excused absence, any responsibilities of the student within the band (solos, section leaders, spot in show) must be taken care of in advance with another band member.  If such preparations are not taken care of, the absence is unexcused.

BEHAVIOR:

1.     Students will be expected to behave in a manner that is exemplary.  No matter where the students are, students will:

a.      Not chew gum in the Band room, regardless of the amount of time spent inside.  IF YOU WALK IN, SPIT IT OUT!

b.     Not wear hats of any kind within closed doors.

c.     Behave in a calm manner at all times.

d.     Not show poor sportsmanship, regardless of the acts of the opposing team.

e.      Refrain from profanity at all times and places.

f.       Treat their property, as well as other’s property, with respect.

g.     Will leave the percussion equipment alone unless they are authorized to use it.

h.     Always pick up after themselves, including items that their band mates may have missed.

2.     Students will abstain from any form of illegal substance unless it is permissible by a licensed medical practitioner.  A signed note from the practitioner is required.

3.     Any student participating in physical or verbal sexual harassment will be dismissed from the program immediately.  This includes:

a.      Crude jokes at the expense of others

b.     Any form of unwanted physical contact

c.     Sexual innuendos, whether or not aimed at another member

4.     Due to the physical nature of this activity, any band member that is pregnant must report the condition.  She will then be exempt from all activities in order to ensure the safety of everyone involved.

5.     Students will refrain from personal displays of affection while attending any function, or while in uniform.  Only the holding of hands will be allowed.

Dear Parent/Guardian,

It’s that time again!  Yes, due to the expenses of this band, we are looking for your support during the year with fundraisers.  We will be doing a variety of fundraisers this year, most of them dealing with food sales.  As with all of such fundraisers, we ask that you allow your student to participate.  Their effort, along with yours, will ensure our success this year.

This year everyone is welcome to allow your student to participate in order to pay off his or her band fees.  Tallies will be kept in order to maintain proper bookkeeping.

Finally, as with all fundraisers, your student is financially responsible for any items they take for sale.  PLEASE NOTE: When the time for collection is due, there will be no returns of any kind for any items or goods unless specified otherwise.

Thank you so much for your help and support this year!  Please sign the form below and lets get ready to have fun!
